From 2005 to 2008 I was group leader at the Institute for System Dynamics at the University of Stuttgart. Since 2008 I am now Professor of Systems Biology at the University of Luxembourg.
The research of the Systems Biology Group at the University of Luxembourg is focussed in the area of experimental and theoretical systems biology. We are applying different modelling techniques (mainly ODE and logical) to biological systems to develop suitable computational models. The analysis of these models using system theoretical methods helps gaining insight into dynamic and stationary properties of the investigated biological networks which in turn is the basis for the suggestion of further promising experiments. We are also performing experimental validation of the models using cell cultivation facilities.
Within the area of mammalian signal transduction one main focus lays in the development of mathematical models of pro- and anti-apoptotic signalling by death receptors in mammalian cells. We are interested in understanding and influencing the signalling protein networks that govern the decision between life and programmed cell death. The second main focus is on the inflammatory signalling networks which play a crucial role within many aging-related diseases like cancer, Alzheimer’s and atherosclerosis.
In addition experimental validation using mammalian cell cultivation is performed within our own cell cultivation facility in close collaboration with experimental groups within the Life Sciences Research Unit.
